Fiber light is a flexible way of lighting which creates unique possibilities when designing with light. Whether of interior or exterior applications, commercial or residential, the unique characteristics of fibre light present a world of exciting possibilities for the lighting designer. Architectural lighting, museums and galleries, landscapes and fountains among others, become more interesting exciting with fiber optic lighting.

What is a fiber light system?

A fiber light system consists of 2 or 3 components:

Light generator

Fiber harness

Fittings on the fiber ends (may be omitted in some cases)

The light generator is the heart of the system. Inside the generator a specially focused high-intensity lamp transmits light into the fiber harness and through the fiber optic cables.

The fiber harness is made up of specially bundled glass or plastic (PMMA) fibers, carrying the light from the light generator. The light emits from the fiber ends (endlight fiber) or from their sides (sidelight fiber). In order to cut and polish the fiber, a fiber termination is mounted.

The fitting is the visible part of an endlight fiber optic system, which optically controls the light to give the effect required. Coupled with their excellent finishes, the fittings are generally smaller than conventional luminaries making them un obtrusive and discreet.

The BIG difference

Basically, the difference between fiber light and conventional lighting methods is the separation of the light source from the light output. This offers unique advantages:

The light output is free of heat and UV radiation

Only one light source is required for many light output points

Electricity is present only at the light generator, not at the points of illumination

The light generator can be located where it is easily accessible for maintenance

To light a space effectively, you need to combine these functions into an integrated design. A well lighted home should include the following:

Ambient or Backward lighting
Ambient or Background lighting used for general lighting purposes to provide overall illumination for atmosphere, safety, security and performance of basic tasks like dressing and cleaning the house. Also provides background brightness.

Task or Focal lighting
Task or Focal lighting used for carrying out an activity be it writing at your desk, reading in bed or cutting vegetables in the kitchen.

Accent lighting
Accent lighting used to highlight specific features e.g. Sculptures, pictures, bookcases or plants etc.

Decorative lighting
Decorative lighting used more for enhancing purposes than illumination. An example of this lighting is the twinkling spots of a chandelier.

“Good lighting creates wonders for ambience of your home. It makes an individual feels special. Just simply change a single light bulb could impose a dramatic change on your environment, so consider what a whole new lighting theme and what lighting design could do.”

Before starting your shopping spree for light fittings here are a few basic questions you need to consider:

1. What sort of lighting you want – intense, soft, bright or moody?

2. Where do you want the light fixture to be mounted – corners, at eye level, ceiling or shoulder height?

3. Do you want movable light fitting or have it fixed in a position?

4. What sort of mood are you attempting to create or achieve – Relax, romantic or functional?

2. Locate wall switches in easily accessible spot at the entrances of each room.

3. A main central switch allows easier control of all the light fixtures and electrical appliances.

4. Electricity consumption will be reduced with dimmer switches. Dimmer is able to control the intensities of a lamp fixtures. The illuminating levels in the room will create
the right mood for varying purposes.

5. For security or cost-saving purposes, censors or timers are use in closets
and cabinets.
